Wow! I can’t believe another semester is complete.  Only two more to go, and then I will start working on my dissertation.  This semester challenged me as a writer, and I learned so much about academic research and writing.  As I inch closer to the dissertation phase, I realize that I still have more to learn about research at the Ph.D. level.

I have always considered myself to be a strong researcher and writer, yet this semester caused me to question my abilities.  I have always been good at locating information.  However, I realized that locating information and conducting research are very different.  For several of the assignments this semester, I was able to locate information regarding the topic, but after reflection, I realized that I was really only scratching the surface of information available.  For example, in one of my courses, I designed an online course to guide curriculum writers through the process of designing digital curricula.  For the assignment, I explored a couple of different frameworks for technology enhanced lesson plans. I selected one based on available resources and a research article or two.  For my role as a district training specialist, this would be an appropriate practice.  However, as a researcher, I need to explore possible frameworks in more depth to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each and explain why the selected framework is the best one for the project.  In depth research requires more time and isn’t always possible outside academia.  However, this level of research is required for research studies.  As I prepare for my role as a researcher, I realize that I need to develop different research skills that allow me to better locate relevant information.

In addition to my research skills, I realize that I need more practice thinking like a researcher.  As I prepare for my dissertation and begin to develop my professional portfolio, I realize that my experience is so limited.  Although I have taken courses related to qualitative and quantitative research methods, I still have so much to learn.  If I am completely honest, I feel like there are so many different types of research available, and I’ve only scratched the surface in my coursework.   Without a better understanding, it is a challenge to know where to start when designing a research study and selecting research methods most appropriate for a given topic.  I’ve been trying to read more about conducting research while focusing on methods and research design when reading journal articles.  I know the courses in the program provide a good foundation for future research, but I feel like independent study is required if I am going to be successful post-doc.

I am looking forward to next semester and the courses I am taking.  Although, I will have a heavy load with four classes, I know the courses will help prepare for my dissertation and work post-doc.  I am looking forward to the time off between now and then.  However, I know that in order to create a portfolio that enhances my marketability and sets me up for future success, I will need to continue working over the break to develop my research skills and generate scholarly writing for publication.
